Vanessa Connolly: Renal Dietitian & CKD Nutrition Expert

Charleston, SC’s Specialized Kidney Nutrition Expert

Eating with chronic kidney disease shouldn’t feel like a constant guessing game.

But for many people with CKD, that’s exactly what it becomes.

You’re told to “drink more water,” “avoid salt,” or “watch potassium,” but no one really explains how to turn that advice into meals that actually work in real life.

Suddenly you’re wondering:

Is this food hurting my kidneys?

What am I actually supposed to eat now?

Why does everyone say something different?

That’s where I come in.

Hi, I’m Vanessa Connolly, a Board-Certified Renal Dietitian and CKD Nutrition Expert based in Charleston, South Carolina.

As a Black renal dietitian, I understand that food is more than nutrients on a lab report. It’s culture, comfort, and connection. My approach to CKD nutrition respects both the science of kidney health and the cultural food traditions that matter to you.

Through virtual consultations, I support clients in Charleston, across South Carolina, and nationwide, bringing specialized kidney nutrition guidance directly to your home.

I created Grain and Green Kidneys to be a trusted space for clear, practical kidney nutrition guidance that actually works in everyday life.

No confusing food lists.
No overly restrictive rules.
Just science-backed strategies and realistic meal ideas that help you care for your kidneys while still enjoying the foods you love.

Why Work With a Specialized Renal Dietitian?

Kidney nutrition is not the same as general healthy eating.

Chronic kidney disease affects how your body processes protein, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and fluids—which means nutrition advice that works for the average person can sometimes make CKD more confusing or even harmful.

Unfortunately, many people with CKD are given very vague guidance, like:

    • “Just drink more water.”
    • “Avoid salt.”
    • “Stay away from bananas and tomatoes.”

But kidney nutrition is far more nuanced than that.

As a Board-Certified Renal Dietitian, I specialize specifically in the nutrition science behind kidney disease. That means I understand how your lab values, CKD stage, medications, and overall health all work together to influence what you should eat.

Instead of handing you a generic kidney diet list, I help you understand why certain foods matter and how to make choices that actually support your kidneys through my personalized kidney nutrition services.

When you work with a renal dietitian, you receive:

Personalized nutrition guidance based on your lab results and CKD stage

Evidence-based strategies that may help slow kidney disease progression

Clear explanations so you understand your labs and what they mean for your diet

Practical meal ideas that fit your lifestyle, culture, and food preferences

Support navigating kidney nutrition without feeling restricted or overwhelmeD

Because kidney nutrition shouldn’t feel like a list of foods you’re no longer allowed to enjoy.

It should feel like a clear, sustainable way of eating that supports your kidneys and your life.

My Story

Before starting Grain and Green Kidneys, I worked as a dialysis dietitian caring for people whose kidney disease had already progressed to dialysis.

And while I loved supporting those patients, one thing stayed with me long after my workdays ended…

Many of the people I cared for told me they had never met with a renal dietitian until they started dialysis.

Some had been living with chronic kidney disease for years before they ever received specialized nutrition guidance.

As a renal dietitian, I knew how much earlier support could make a difference.

Seeing patients reach dialysis without ever having clear nutrition guidance earlier in their CKD journey was heartbreaking.

People deserved support sooner.

They deserved to understand how nutrition could support their kidneys before things became critical.

That realization is what led me to create Grain and Green Kidneys.

Today, I help people living with CKD feel less overwhelmed, more informed, and more confident about how they eat.

Whether you’re:

    • unsure what foods are safe
    • overwhelmed by conflicting advice
    • anxious about cooking kidney-friendly meals
    • or worried about making the wrong choices

You don’t have to figure it out alone.

I walk alongside you, helping you understand your labs, your nutrition needs, and how to build meals that support your kidneys without giving up the foods and traditions you love.

Because when nutrition finally makes sense, fear gets replaced with confidence.

And that can completely change the way you live with CKD.

My Plant-Forward Approach to Kidney Health

I believe in a plant-based approach to CKD nutrition—it’s not always about cutting out all animal products, but shifting towards more plant-forward meals that can help improve kidney health.

Research consistently shows that plant-focused diets can help:

    • Reduce protein waste products that burden the kidneys
    • Lower blood pressure naturally
    • Improve phosphorus control
    • Support healthy potassium balance when done correctly

Together, we’ll create a way of eating that:

    • Supports your lab results and kidney function
    • Fits your lifestyle, preferences, and culture
    • Feels flexible, satisfying, and sustainable long-term
